The Client That Changed My Writing Career
After my early experience with freelance writing left me burned out and discouraged, I took a step back from actively chasing projects. Writing $10 articles about topics I didn’t care about had drained a lot of my enthusiasm, and I needed some time to rethink how I wanted to approach writing professionally.
I didn’t delete my freelancing profiles entirely. Instead, I left a few portfolio pieces up on Upwork and stepped away from constantly bidding on new jobs. At the time, I wasn’t expecting much to come from it.
Then one day, something surprising happened.
A potential client reached out to me directly.
His name was Christopher, and he had been looking through writers’ portfolios on the platform. After reviewing my work, he believed I might be a good fit for a project he had been developing for a long time. He explained that he had an idea for a novel and had been working on the story for over fifteen years.
Naturally, I was skeptical.
If you’ve ever spent time on freelancing platforms, you know that not every opportunity is legitimate. When Christopher first contacted me, the project sounded almost too good to be true. The scope of the work was much larger than anything I had been offered before, and the payment structure he described was far more generous than what I had previously experienced.
Part of me was convinced it had to be a scam.
But after several conversations and reviewing the material he had already developed, it became clear that Christopher was serious about the project. He had spent years refining the story and had created a detailed treatment outlining the world, characters, and direction of the book.
That project eventually became Kinetics of Ghosts.
From the beginning, Christopher treated the collaboration as a true partnership. Instead of simply handing me an idea and expecting me to fill in the blanks, he shared the creative process with me. We discussed story structure, character arcs, and the emotional core of the narrative.
For me, it was an incredible opportunity.
Not only was I being trusted with a complex and meaningful story, but I was also able to focus on the type of writing I had always wanted to pursue: long-form storytelling.
The experience challenged me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The book contains powerful emotional moments and some intense scenes, and writing those sections required me to fully immerse myself in the characters and their experiences. I’ve always believed that good storytelling requires honesty and vulnerability, and there were times when putting those emotions on the page was more difficult than I expected.
But the project also pushed me to grow as a writer.
Kinetics of Ghosts became the longest manuscript I had ever worked on. Before this project, I had never written a novel that crossed the 60,000-word threshold. Reaching that milestone was a huge accomplishment for me and a reminder of how much my writing had evolved since those early freelance days.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of this experience has been the relationship built around the project. What started as a ghostwriting opportunity has gradually grown into a true creative collaboration.
After working together for nearly three years, Christopher and I have continued developing the story and pushing the project forward. The commitment I made at the beginning was simple: I would give everything I had to the project and see it through to completion.
That commitment changed the trajectory of my career.
Instead of remaining a ghostwriter behind the scenes, I am now recognized as a co-writer on the project. When the book is eventually published through a traditional publishing house, it will mark an entirely new chapter in my writing journey.
Looking back, it’s incredible to think about how close I came to walking away from freelancing entirely. If I had removed my portfolio or given up on the idea of writing professionally, I might never have received that message.
Sometimes the opportunities that change your life arrive when you least expect them.
For me, it started with a single message from a stranger who believed I could help bring his story to life.
And that message ended up changing my writing career.
