A Chaotic Introduction

When I first started writing I never imagined how much it could change my life. Hi, my name is Alex and I am a 25 year old Author, mom of one and entrepreneur. As a young writer with no formal background and training I have had to pave my own way to learning how to write engaging and enjoyable stories. It hasn’t always been the easiest thing to do especially while juggling a baby and a household. I hope that I can show you how to incorporate human connection and the human experience into your work. Follow my journey as I pursue my dreams and help others pursue theirs.

I never went to college for writing, I don’t have any creative writing background other than what I have written in journals. As a girl growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and Dyslexia I was constantly being told that I wasn’t smart because I couldn’t focus. That I was lazy because I lacked motivation and would hyper focus on things that were less important and more enjoyable.

I was going through some old journals that I found recently and I have so many stories that were written back in 2014 that I now get to revisit and add new life too. If I went back in time and told my younger self that I had grown up to be an author I think she would have laughed in my face. It is honestly unreal how much my writing has improved since I started committing time to it every day.

Writing doesn’t just have to be pen to paper. I do write a lot of my stories in notebooks by hand before moving them to a digital medium to help with editing. Sometimes I sit down and type as if my fingers are on fire and they won't stop until every ounce of idea is out of me. And sometimes if I cant write anymore and I cant type anymore I use my voice. Speech to text is not perfect but when you have ideas flowing through your head faster than your fingers can type or your hands can write then you get those ideas down. Find a way that works for you and dedicate a few minutes a day to writing, even if its just you doing a voice recording of an idea you had.

A lot of the time I would start with writing a stream of consciousness, writing what pops into my head. I would sit down just to journal and would suddenly veer off into a story or a scene from a story. I might even be sitting in a coffee shop or at the park and see a real life moment that inspires something inside of me. With social media these days I feel like there is often an overwhelming amount of "inspiration" around us. This can also make you feel as if your story is unoriginal or that there are too many already existing stories that sound like yours does.

Your story is original because it was written by you and there is only one of you in this galaxy. Your story is unique because you are unique and no two people are exactly the same. Give your story a chance because giving up before you put clothes on your skeleton is never a good idea.

When I am coming up with new ideas I always talk about them out loud with my husband. His enthusiasm to hear more also encourages me to write more. I really hope I can encourage you to write more and talk about your writing with your close friends and family. Don’t be discouraged if people are telling you that it's a waste of time or that what you are doing is stupid. I just want to help you tell your story.

If you are interested in content like that I advise you to like and subscribe for more blog posts, as well as check us out on YouTube and Instagram for more writing, self publishing and life content. I recently heard about this concept called a workshop. I am very intrigued but also don’t have a lot of friends that I can do this with so if anyone is interested in participating in a weekly writers workshop with me please let me know! I would love to read others' work and give comments and help out in any way!
